Wi-Fi Generations

Since 1999 Wi-Fi has ushered the age of wireless communication, changing the way the world communicates. Wi-Fi has improved over the past twenty years, with new versions of the technology bringing faster speeds, lower latency, and better user experiences in a multitude of environments and with a variety of device types.

Similar to cellular network technology generations (3G, LTE, and 4G), the most current generation of Wi-Fi is likely to deliver a better user experience. Wi-Fi technology is based on wireless communication standards created by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE).

To easily identify the Wi-Fi network version a client device is operating on, users should look for the icon in their device user interface.
